I have struggled always with a very simple question?
- If it is a school’s job to educate, then why do so many children struggle to read and do simple math moving into secondary education and beyond?
- Surely this basic necessity should be every educational institution’s top priority?
- Why are our numbers so high?
I have experienced first-hand the traumas associated with a lack of these skills in early years, and I have witnessed the same struggles in many students, both young and old.
I know we can do better.
I understand that all children begin school with different backgrounds and experiences.
That there are many factors to consider in a ‘whole child’s growth and development’.
But teaching reading and math – the science of it stays the same.
I could lead you to studies and stories where successful learning took place despite low socio- economic standings, ethnicity or any other environmental factors.
So, what was the X factor?
MOST often it’s a teacher that didn’t give up and found the answers!
THEN, on a whole school level, a principal who had that same attitude!
It may be just as simple as asking the right question –
What does this child/ person need to learn?
Then to never stop asking till the answer is found.
Today we have the worlds wealth of knowledge and expertise available to us at a simple click of a button. It has never, in the history of mankind been easier to find answers to difficult questions.
I am believing for better days ahead when more children can read and do their basic math.
Where educational outcomes will not be tossed around due to ‘outside’ factors.
Where those who have been charged to help a person learn can ask the bigger and tougher questions- and find the answers, then push through till breakthrough!
Will you believe with me?
